How do you get to World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros?

My brother is obsessing about how to get to World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros (the old, original Nintendo version). He says something about unlimited lives but doesn't know how to get them. Does anyone know how to get to this level and can you please walk my bro through this step by step. Thanks.
I was thinking it was the starting, because of the whole 1-1 thing. He's the video gamer, and saw this video of a hard level (it said 1-1). Now he's obsessed and I'm just annoyed by him, trying to find answers.
Now he just told me it is a "special world 1-1" that he wants to get to. Anyone know of it?
He says go to myspace videos type in "Mario" and go to the video titled the Hardest Level of Mario

Uh, World 1-1 is the level you start in, so there's no secret to getting there.

The infinite lives trick is a doozy, though. The following is copied from GameFAQs.com:

"Get to world 3-1, and become Super Mario. At the end of the level(the staircase before the end flag) you will see two turtles coming down the stairs, jump over the first one and then jump on the second one. It should hit the star and bounce back, from here jump on it and keep yourself up, after a certain number of bounces without hitting the ground, each consecutive bounce will get you a 1-up. Get as many as you want but be warned, if you get over 100 you will get a Game Over."

So, not technically infinite, but darn close.
